Helping Math Finally Click

Calculus & Higher Mathematics Tutoring

Understanding mathematics shouldn't feel like memorizing a collection of random formulas. Whether you're preparing for AP Calculus AB/BC, working through college calculus, linear algebra, or differential equations, my goal is to help you develop the understanding that makes challenging ideas finally click and sticks with you long after the exam.

Booking is handled securely through Wyzant. New students can create a free Wyzant account after clicking.

When Math Stops Making Sense

Many students don't struggle because they aren't capable. They struggle because somewhere along the way, mathematics started feeling like a list of procedures instead of ideas.Maybe you've experienced something like this:

  • You know the steps but don't understand why they work.

  • Every new topic feels disconnected from the last.

  • You study for hours but still freeze during exams.

  • Your professor moves too quickly to ask the questions you really have.

  • You can follow examples, but solving new problems on your own feels overwhelming.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. More importantly, it's something we can fix.

My Approach

Most tutoring focuses on helping students finish today's homework. My focus is helping students build understanding that lasts. That means we don't simply ask, "How do we solve this problem?"We ask bigger questions like:

  • Why does this idea exist?

  • What is the underlying mathematics trying to accomplish?

  • How does this connect to what you've already learned?

  • When should you recognize this approach on your own?

Once those ideas become clear, the procedures become much easier to remember and apply. The goal isn't just getting the correct answer. It's developing the understanding and confidence to solve unfamiliar problems independently.

What Working Together Looks Like

Every student learns differently, so every lesson begins by figuring out where your understanding starts to break down. From there, we'll work together to:

  • Diagnose misconceptions instead of covering them up.

  • Build intuition before relying on formulas.

  • Connect new ideas to concepts you already understand.

  • Practice deliberately until you can solve problems independently.

As sessions progress, I gradually shift more responsibility to you. The measure of a successful tutor isn't how dependent students become. It's how confidently they can solve problems without me.

Who I Work Best With

My tutoring is designed for motivated students who want more than quick homework help.I primarily work with:

  • AP Calculus AB & BC

  • College Calculus I, II & III (Single and Multivariable Calculus)

  • Linear Algebra

  • Differential Equations

Some students come to rebuild a shaky foundation. Others already earn good grades and want a deeper understanding. Both are welcome! The common thread is a willingness to think, ask questions, and genuinely understand the mathematics.

What Students Say

"My preparedness and confidence for math tests have skyrocketed."
Gordon
Multivariable Calculus
"He was never just showing me how to do examples, and would actually take the time to review the core concepts, which really helped me succeed in class."
Avery
AP Calculus BC
"He built a space that not only allowed me to mess up, but work through the process myself with him as a guiding hand."
Inga
AP Calculus AB
One theme appears again and again throughout my students' feedback: They leave sessions feeling more confident because the mathematics finally makes sense.

About Me

Lightbulb Calculus Tutor

Hi, I'm Shin!I'm a UCLA graduate with dual degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mathematics, and I've been tutoring mathematics since 2020.Over the past several years, I've worked with students across high school and college mathematics, helping them move beyond memorization toward genuine understanding.I'm also continuing my mathematical education through graduate study in Applied Mathematics, allowing me to keep expanding both my subject knowledge and my teaching.Students often describe my teaching as:Clear
Structured
Patient
Thoughtful
Encouraging
More importantly, they describe feeling comfortable asking questions, even when they're completely stuck. That's exactly the learning environment I strive to create.
